What happens if my vehicle runs out of DEF?

Modern diesel vehicles are equipped with a DEF gauge that alerts drivers when levels are low. If DEF runs completely out, the vehicle's engine power will be reduced to encourage immediate refilling. This is a built-in feature to ensure emissions compliance. Once the DEF tank is refilled, normal power levels are restored automatically.

Does DEF freeze? Will that damage my system?

DEF begins to freeze at 12°F (-11°C). However, freezing does not harm the quality of the DEF or damage your system. DEF expands by approximately 7%, and tanks are designed to accommodate this expansion. During vehicle operation, SCR systems provide heating for the DEF tank and supply lines. If DEF freezes when the vehicle is shut down, the heating system will quickly return it to liquid form, and normal vehicle operation will not be affected.
